Sudare is mainly constructed from organic materials. We make effort to keep the natural part of the material.
Common reed that we use is usually been left for 3-10 years. The more time it is left more flavor it creates and
especially Japanese common reed has characteristic taste.
Then the common reed is put into special Sudare machine. You cannot make any new machine that works
the same. We have 6 of the machines. One of them is 80 years old.
We use linen, cotton or synthetic fiber yarn depending on the use. For 80 years we have been going througt
same process and putting every single string in the machine to knit through. We make each product with
the respectful way and mind that we learnt from the tradition.
Recently, we get orders to fix and repair Sudare from 10~50 years ago.
We knit back Sudare when the thread are been worn out, and re-frame the cloth on all corner
and send back to the customers. Recycle of the Sudare.
Kawasaki Sudare started when Otoji Kawasaki worked as a apprentice in traditional
Sudare store in Kyoto. At that time(1962), there were 3 young apprentices all together.
The rest have retired from the career and he is the only craftsman left and there are
only less than 10 Sudare store left in Kyoto.
When we were being aware that the tradition of Sudare might die out, one designer
ordered us to make “bright red Sudare” in 2000. After continuous process of trial and
error we succeeded making the bright red Sudare. Then we have made “IRODORI”.
We believe that the products we make now will become a tradition of the future some day.
